How to change your windows 10 account name

Hi every one in this tutorial am gonna be showing your how to easily change your windows 10 administrator account name or just how to change any windows 10 account name to your preference.

Before we dive deep into this tutorial, i would like to take a second to clear the confusion around changing windows 10 account names.

There are two account types that one can use to access a windows 10 system.
1) Local Account
2) Microsoft live account (Roaming account)

A local account is an account that is manually setup on a particular machine and it can only be used to access that machine. You cannot use your local account to access another windows system such as windows 10 pc or any other Microsoft system.

On the other hand, a Microsoft live account is an account type that you can use to access any of your Microsoft system enabled devices. That same account, can be used to access your windows 10 machine, windows phone, ms app store and many more Microsoft platforms

So to change your windows 10 account name you need to determine which account type is your system currently set to use. In this tutorial, i will show you how to change your windows 10 administrator account name for both local account and Microsoft live account.

You can confirm that your windows 10 machine is set to use a Microsoft live account in many ways.

  1. On your windows sign in page you will see your Microsoft live account first and last names plus your email address.
  2. You can also confirm that your windows 10 machine is set to use a Microsoft live account by:
    1. Going to start
    2. Click on settings
    3. Click on accounts
    4. Click on accounts again
    5. Under your email and accounts you should be able to see:
      1. your Ms live account first and last name plus you ms live email address.
      2. Also before your profile picture, you should be able to see an option to change your sign in type to local account since the current is ms live account. It should read Sign in with a local account instead.

To confirm that your windows 10 machine is set to use a local account for access.

  1. Click on start
  2. Click on settings.
  3. Click on accounts.
  4. Click on accounts again.
  5. Under your email and accounts you should be able to see:
    1. Local Account under your user name.
    2. Also before your profile picture, you should be able to see an option to change your sign in type to Microsoft live account since the current is a local account. It should read Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.

Once you have determined that your system is set to use local account access system, all you have to do to change your windows 10 account name is:

  1. go to windows search
  2. Search for control panel
  3. Click on control pane desktop app
  4. Click on user accounts
  5. Click on user accounts again
  6. Click on change your account name
  7. Change the name to whatever name you want
  8. Click on change name
  9. Sign out for the change to take place
    Next time you sign in to your windows 10 pc, your account name will be changed.

To change your account name when your system is set to be accessed using Microsoft live account,
First your system needs to be online.

  1. go to start
  2. Click on settings
  3. Click on Accounts
  4. Under your email and accounts click on Manage my Microsoft account
  5. Click on edit name
  6. Change your first name and last name as you wish
  7. Click on save
  8. Restart your computer

You need to be aware that after this change, you Microsoft email name and last name will also be changed.

The next time you reboot your pc your windows 10 account name shall be changed.

How to change your windows 10 access type from local to Microsoft live account and from Microsoft live account to local

You may wish to change your windows 10 sign in type from local to ms live account and vice vasa, if that is the case, to change from Live to local account all you need to do is:

  1. go to start
  2. Click on settings
  3. Click on Accounts
  4. Under your email and accounts click on sign in with a local account instead
  5. In the Current password field, enter your Microsoft live account email password and click next
  6. On the next screen you can update your username, and provide the password for your local account
  7. Click next and click on sign out and finish to finish.

The next time you login to your pc you will be requested for your local account credentials.

To switch from a local account to a Microsoft live account:

  1. Go to start
  2. Click on settings
  3. Click on Accounts
  4. Under your email and accounts click on sign in with a Microsoft account instead
  5. On the next screen, Enter your Microsoft live email address or Skype name if you have one
  6. Click on next
  7. Enter your Microsoft live account password and click on next
  8. On the next screen you will be asked for your current password, here you need to provide your current local account password. If you don’t have one set, you can leave this field blank click next.
  9. You can click skip this step to skip windows hello settings if you wish.
  10. Restart your pc

Hopefully the next time you login, you will be required to use your Microsoft live account to sign in to your system and every other windows enabled platforms.
